SIA junior workshop 2024

The 2024 SIA junior workshop was held in Stockholm at the Långholmen hotel and conference center on September 2 to 3. Junior researchers from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands participated, presented manuscript drafts from their ongoing work (see Table 1 for a list of presenters and titles) and contributed to others’ work by reading each other’s papers and providing feedback. SIA Junior researchers presenting at the 27th  Nordic Congress of Gerontology

Junior researchers within the SIA network started to work on a symposium abstract to the 27th Nordic Congress of Gerontology during our junior workshop in September 2023. The abstract was subsequently submitted, and we are now proud to announce that the symposium idea was accepted by the organization committee. The symposium is titled ”Social inequalities and ageing in a Nordic setting – from working life to residential care” and consists of five presentations given by Pernilla Alencar Siljehag (Aging Research Center, Karolinska institutet and Stockholm Gerontology Research Center, Sweden), Mari Heitto (Programme in Health Sciences, Tampere University, Finland), Laura Pirhonen

SIA Junior workshop in Stockholm 2023

In September 2023, ten junior researchers in the SIA network gathered in Stockholm/Lidingö, Sweden, for two days of networking and research presentations. Presentations and discussions offered various perspectives on inequalities and aging, for example intergenerational transfers, mental and cognitive health, health care utilization, social relationships, and selective mortality, to name some. Keynotes were given by Marta Szebehely and Else Foverskov. We also had a panel discussion about the benefits and headaches of doing an international postdoc. As an extended outcome of the workshop, a symposium abstract was put together by some of the junior researchers and submitted for the Nordic Congress

A Sad Loss: Barbro Westerholm

Dear all SIA colleagues and friends, We have been reached by the sad news that Barbro Westerholm, 89, died a few days ago. May she rest in peace. Those who participated in the final conference of the SIA programme in September were extremely lucky to have Barbro as our final panel. She participated the whole day, glad to have a day off from the not-so-pleasant election campaign and instead focusing on an important aspect of ageing research. SIA Network Meeting

 The SIA 2.0 network meeting was held at Skeppsholmen on September 5. During the day, 14 junior researchers from the Nordic countries presented ongoing work, and each paper had discussants from the same audience. The title of the papers can be found HERE. The network also invited Professor Teppo Kröger, University of Jyväskylä, to give a much-appreciated talk on his recent book “Care Poverty”.
